Kaizen: Small, Measurable Steps Instead of One Big Leap

How Kaizen Works?

What Does Kaizen Look Like in Engineering??

  • Standard job: A job is defined by the best known method; improvement is made based on this standard. If there is no standard, improvement cannot be measured.
  • Measurable target: Not "better", but "cycle time from 42s to 38s". Kaizen does not rely on unmeasurable improvement.
  • Reversible trial: Small change means small risk. If it doesn't work, the loss is small; If it works, it will be standard.

What are its limits??

Kaizen does not solve every problem. In cases requiring a leap in technology (physical limit of capacity, need for a new production method), incremental improvement is insufficient; In this case, the investment decision should not be postponed. The second trap is the “kaizen theatre”: suggestion meetings without measurement and standardization give a feeling of improvement but do not produce results. The loop is broken when the "Check" step is skipped.
